REIT Education

Many investors looking for high income turn to Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) as an alternative to bonds.

REITs are a special form of security that may trade like a stock on major markets or have limited liquidity, yet gives the investor the advantage of participating in large-scale commercial real estate projects with favorable tax advantages and the potential for capital appreciation.

As long as a REIT remains primarily engaged in real estate property management and as long as it pays substantially all its income out to shareholders in the form of dividends, the REIT's profits are not subject to income tax. This provides a big tax advantage to the shareholder, since the REIT's profits are only taxed once, at the personal level, instead of twice, as most dividends are.
